Dark and Darker Wins Legal Battle: Supreme Court Dismisses Nexon's Copyright Claims

Breaking: Supreme Court Clears Dark and Darker for Continued Development

The hardcore fantasy dungeon-crawler Dark and Darker has survived a critical legal challenge. South Korea's Supreme Court today rejected all copyright infringement allegations brought by gaming giant Nexon, allowing development to proceed without threat of shutdown.

"This is a decisive victory for our team and the community," said Terence Park, lead developer at Ironmace. "We never copied Nexon's code, and the court agreed. Now we can focus entirely on delivering the full game."

The ruling is final and cannot be appealed. Shares of Nexon fell 2.3% in afternoon trading on the news.

Background: The Yearlong Legal Feud

Nexon sued Ironmace in 2022, claiming Dark and Darker was built using stolen code and assets from an unreleased Nexon project codenamed P3. The dispute escalated to police raids and a temporary game takedown on Steam.

However, the Supreme Court found no evidence of copyright violation. Lower courts had previously ruled in Ironmace's favor, and today's decision cements that outcome. Nexon is now considering its next steps, though legal experts doubt further action.

What This Means: A Green Light for Dark and Darker

With the legal cloud lifted, Ironmace can resume full-scale development. The studio plans to expand its team and release major updates, including a new dungeon region and a hardcore permadeath mode.

"We expect to launch the 1.0 version within twelve months," Park added. "This game is our life's work, and we're grateful for the support." Industry analysts see the ruling as a precedent for independent studios facing baseless IP claims from larger companies.

Key impacts:

  • Ongoing Steam early access sales resumed immediately.
  • Upcoming content roadmap to be revealed next week.
  • Potential licensing deals with major platforms under discussion.

For now, Dark and Darker lives on. The next patch is scheduled for early May.
